“Smell of Clean” Is Not Clean: Why Fragrance Could Be Fooling You

Some people walk into a room and say, “Wah, smells so clean!”
I walk in and ask, “Smells like what chemical?”

The Nose Isn’t a Cleaning Tool

Many households confuse fragrance with cleanliness. But that “lemon” or “fresh linen” scent in your air freshener? It’s usually a mix of synthetic chemicals — not actual cleanliness.

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, synthetic fragrances can include dozens of compounds, some of which are linked to hormone disruption, headaches, or allergic reactions.

Even “green” products are not always better. A 2019 study published in Air Quality, Atmosphere & Health found that many “eco” cleaners still emitted potentially harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Why You Shouldn’t Mask the Mess

Sprays and plug-ins don’t remove odours — they mask them. That mildew smell under the sink? The sweaty dog smell in the sofa? Still there, just now wearing perfume.

True cleaning means:

  • Removing the source of odours
  • Deep-cleaning soft surfaces that trap smells
  • Ventilating the home properly
  • Being aware of what your nose isn’t telling you
