The Truth About “Spring Cleaning”: Why Once a Year Is a Joke

You know what I don’t understand? Why people treat “spring cleaning” like it’s some sacred annual ritual. Once a year? That’s like brushing your teeth only before Chinese New Year — just to impress guests.

Homes today are different. We’ve got aircon running 24/7, windows sealed tighter than a durian in a Grab ride, and clutter from five Shopee deliveries a week. Dust, grease, and invisible nasties aren’t waiting for March to show up — they’re piling up every day.

Let’s Talk About Your Mattress

When’s the last time you cleaned it? Don’t tell me never. You sleep on it every night, sweating, shedding skin, breathing in whatever’s lodged in there. Dust mites, dead skin, maybe that cough you “thought was from the haze.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor indoor air quality — often caused by dirty soft furnishings — can trigger allergies, asthma, and fatigue. And no, your lavender room spray is not a cure.

Sofas, Curtains, and the Great Mould Festival

Singapore’s humidity is the perfect breeding ground for mould, especially on fabric surfaces that rarely see sunlight or cleaning. That’s why I always say: if you haven’t cleaned it since COVID started, don’t sit on it — burn it.

Surface Cleaning ≠ Deep Cleaning

Wiping the table and vacuuming crumbs doesn’t count. Real cleaning means pulling out the dust that’s hiding deep inside — mattresses, cushions, behind the fridge. The kind of places you only see when you move house… or trip over something.

What You Can Do (Before It’s Too Late):

  • Schedule a proper deep cleaning every few months — not once a year
  • Target soft furnishings, not just hard surfaces
  • Don’t wait until someone sneezes — prevent the buildup early
  • Get help if you can’t do it yourself. Pride doesn’t pay medical bills
